The Witches: Book review (Lilia Araujo)

 Book review

The Witches by Roald Dahl tells the story of a boy and his grandmother, which come to discover the place where witches meet annually. Eventually, they set up a plan to get rid of the witches of that place, and later all the witches in the United Kingdom.

Focusing on its good points, since it included images and a not-so-complicated vocabulary, it was easy to follow and understand. Additionally, one could somewhat relate to the character’s way of reacting and speaking, enhancing the reading experience as a whole.

Regarding what I did not like that much, I would definitely mention how the story ends. Taking into consideration that it is a children’s story, and even when the genre is “dark fantasy”, I would have imagined a happier ending where the boy becomes human again instead of remaining a mouse.

Still, despite its pros and cons, I really enjoyed reading it, and I think it was a nice story that managed to catch the reader’s attention, regardless of age. Probably because of the previously mentioned, it did not cross my mind that I would be sad at some points of the story, considering I thought it would be mostly a sort of adventure story.

Finally, I consider I may actually recommend it to someone else since I strongly think anyone could enjoy the story. In regards to the author, it depends on whether or not his other stories are also children’s books so, if they are, I am likely to continue reading from him. With that said, I might explore some more children’s dark fantasy books in the future, and there is no doubt I would take those opportunities to practice the language since it would not feel like I am practising it but rather enjoying a hobby.

  1. Lilia,
This is an excellent book review! I really liked the way you described the story, as well as the recommendation you have made. Of course, there are always a few cons regarding the endings we do not expect. It's also very good to hear that you would like to continue reading further on this genre. Your mark is=100.
    Cheers,
    TB
