Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (Lilia Araujo)

Reading Control 2

Title: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2005)
Brief summary of the chapters you have read between the previous control and this one:
In previous chapters, Percy had been experiencing problems at school that were beyond strange and, as a result of other factors such as his misbehaving, he ended up being expelled from school. Later, he travelled with his mom to their favourite place, just to be attacked by unknown creatures. To his surprise, not only his best friend but also his mom would act in an unusual way.

Briefly describe the most important aspects of the story and how the plot develops: Right when his mom and he were being attacked, Grover arrived. And this occurrence not being rare enough, he also came in a form that Percy had never seen before: with cloven hooves instead of feet. Because of this, he admitted his true form, the one of a satyr. Due to these past events, Grover had no other choice but to tell Percy what exactly was going on, admitting that Mrs. Dodd was real and that he had been lying to him to protect him this whole time, stating that the less Percy knew, the fewer monsters he would attract. They had no time to explain anything since they were still being chased. The monster, a minotaur, managed to make Percy's mom disappear, but Percy couldn't stay still and made everything he could to defeat it. They both headed to Camp Half-Blood, where they would later meet Mr. Brunner again (or rather Chiron, which happened to be his real name, and who would actually be a centaur), and two new people: Annabeth Chase, and Mr. D (or Mr. Dionysus). This last character was the camp director, and was also the one that explained Percy that Greek gods actually exist and that they aren't just myths. He also mentioned Percy's real name, it being Perseus. While chatting with Chiron, Percy discovered that Grover had been trying to find a hero to bring to the camp, and that he had failed this mission in previous attempts. He noticed that this topic was a sore point for Chiron since he wouldn’t give any more details regarding the “disaster” that happened back then. Chiron showed Percy most of the areas of the camp, and slightly explained the type of events they carried on. He also mentioned that he was the one who trained Hercules, and that even though he was supposed to be dead, he continued on doing his job as a teacher for heroes. Later, Percy was told to stay at the cabin eleven for an undetermined time. That cabin is the one that would always take the newcomers since the god that owned it was Hermes, the god of visitors and thieves. Annabeth took the role as a guide for Percy and, because of her, he learned that monsters don't die but only disappear for, approximately, a timeline. That they don't have a soul to begin with, and that they should be referred to as archetypes due to the fact that they are prime forces. Annabeth also revealed that everyone in the camp went through the same as him: they were all diagnosed with dyslexia, ADHD, and attention problems in general. Sometime after that, Percy and Annabeth got into a fight at the bathrooms with Clarisse, the daughter of Ares (the god of war). For some reason, water shot out of the toilets, leaving everything wet but Percy. Eventually, Annabeth revealed that there had been problems in Olympus; and Groover explained who were the Big Three (the owners of the three most important cabins at the camp): Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, the sons of Kronos. They governed the sky, the sea, and the Underworld, respectively.
After noticing how his wounds healed by touching water, Percy and everyone in the camp discovered who his father was: Poseidon. In the end, Percy consulted the Oracle and it told him he had to find the stolen lighting bolt of Zeus before the summer solstice so that the war between his father and him wouldn't occur.
Describe the behavior of the main characters including any major events and mention if you feel identified with any of them: Percy had been experiencing major trust issues since he had just now discovered truths about his life in general, as well as other people's lives. In this sense, I think I haven't experienced something like this, or at least not at this level since it is really difficult for me and for the people around me to keep secrets of such magnitude from each other. At times, Percy felt extremely confused because he was bombarded with information about his life and his environment without prior explanation of any type. Regarding this, maybe I have experienced something similar where I have missed part of an explanation and I have been left unable to catch up with the rest of it.
