The Golden Compass (Uziel Beltrán)

Reading Report #2.

Brief description of the new characters that have been incorporated to the novel:

From this point on, Mrs. Coulter plays a major role in the plot . She is described as a beautiful, well-educated, young lady, who has a daemon settled as a golden monkey. Superficially, she is charming, but deep down, she is quite manipulative and has hostile intentions. Other important characters are the Costas, a very friendly, Gyptian family that is basically made up of a mother and her two children. They take care of Lyra and reveal a big secret.

Summary of the chapters I have read so far:

At this moment, Lyra is desperate because Roger is still missing. Nevertheless, she temporarily forgets about that because a beautiful lady has arrived in Jordan College. This lady is called Mrs. Coulter and wants to meet the young girl. Once they have the opportunity to get to know each other, the elegant woman offers her a job as her assistant in London. Without hesitation, the brave girl accepts the offer in exchange for Mrs. Coulter’s help in order to find Roger. Before taking off, the Master gives Lyra something called the “alethiometer” and makes her promise she will keep it safe and secret.

Everything seems to be bright with Mrs. Coulter now that Lyra is with her in London. However, there was a cocktail party that the lady held at her house, which was attended by some suspicious people. Unexpectedly, Lyra overhears them talking about the General Oblation Board, which is considered to be closely linked to the Gobblers, so she and Pantalaimon decide to run away from there and go to the city. It does not take long for them to be found by bounty hunters. Fortunately, some Gyptians rescue Lyra and take her with them to their camp. Once there, Lyra stays with the Costas, a Gyptian family whose young child has been captured by the Gobblers.

Finally, a major event in this part of the plot is that Lyra finds out, thanks to the Costas, that Mrs. Coulter and Lord Asriel are her parents. That is why, now more than ever, the girl wants to find his father, who is believed to be captured as well.
