The picture of Dorian Gray: book review (Yuli Coronado)

The picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (1890)

Book review

The picture of Dorian Gray is a philosophical gothic novel written by the Irish author Oscar Wilde in 1890.

The story is set in London, England in the 19th century. Everything begins with the painter Basil Hallward introducing Dorian Gray to his aristocrat friend, Lord Henry Wotton. After that meeting, the young man comprehended why he had been envied by others, his physical beauty. Since then, he saved the manifestation of this truth, Hallward’s portrait of Gray. Later on, his love for a young actress came to an end when his arrogance provoked her death. Therefore, over time, Gray’s narcissism did not cease and when he made the decision of destroying the painting due to his harmful lifestyle, he died. His portrait became his own despicable soul.

In this novel, what is really enjoyable is Wilde’s narrative to create really authentic characters. Their conversations in each chapter are captivating and the intentions they show reflect the elite belief in London of that century.

What I consider I would have liked to see regards Gray's family; how he was raised as what were the experiences he faced before joining the British elite and becoming Hallward’s friend.

In conclusion, the picture of Dorian Gray is an iconic novel that allows people to comprehend how a life of excesses can damage someone’s identity, and the way in which society constantly wants to persuade others ideas when they desire to reach a passion or dream.

Analyzing every detail in the novel, I will definitely recommend it to anyone with the interest of classic novels from the 19th century. Thus, it may become better for those who had previously read Wilde’s work. Additionally, this book genre is fascinating to read in autumn, especially when Halloween and Day of the dead are near. Finally, since I have read Wilde’s books before, I will contemplate other authors with similar genres.
