The picture of Dorian Gray (Yuli Coronado)
Reading report 2.
After Basil had introduced Dorian Gray to Lord Henry, Gray started to spend more time with him. Then, one day that he was waiting for the aristocrat man in his own residence, Lord Henry’s wife arrived and felt stupefied that Dorian was in her mansion. She did not overreact to his presence. She already knew who was him. Lord Henry had got several photos of him in the living room. Thus, she decided to introduce herself and, while they were discussing the art of music, her husband appeared. Victoria did not mind to leave again because she was aware that they married to maintain an elite status in the English society.
Regarding Dorian, he made the comment that he was in love with an actress whose name was Sibyl Vane. He met her the day he wanted to tour around the underprivileged spots of the city. It was the first time he was really in love, even though he just barely knew about her past. Despite his vain behaviour he desired to demonstrate to Hallward and Lord Henry what he really felt for Sibyl. Therefore, he announced he was engaged. Both had the confidence that if he made it happen he would have become his opposite, undoubtedly a sentimental person. Despite their thoughts, they accepted Dorian’s invitation to meet his fiancée. But in the middle of the theatre play, to their surprise, her performance was disappointing. They considered it a complete failure and Gray was more shocked about it. When Dorian asked Sibyl why her performance was so discouraging, she mentioned her discovery of how acting can become so empty and artificial as how reality was brought into her making Sibyl to change her mind. Unexpectedly, he broke with her, even though he loved her.
When Dorian arrived home facing his conflicting emotions he noticed that his portrait seemed different, it was expressing anger. Thus, he realized something surreal was happening and that he would have severely hurt Sibyl. He knew he had to give her an apology since he comprehended she would be the only one to transform him into a better man. Unfortunately, the next day, the morning papers informed that Sibyl had killed herself. Also, Lord Henry wrote a letter to Gray, but he did not read it. The tragedy was causing a severe pain to him and in his mind everything was a nightmare. He had the hunch that the painting was connected to his real personality. It was a mirror of his truly dark soul.
