Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (Lilia Araujo)

Reading Control 1

Title: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2005)
Author: Rick Riordan
Genre: Fantasy and Adventure
Chapters: 22
Setting: So far, it looks like the story takes place in New York and, apparently, it is set in the XXI century.
Characters:
Percy Jackson: a sarcastic and troubled, 12-year-old, green-eyed, black-haired boy with apparently bad luck. Apart from that, he tends to be negative in the sense that he talks a lot about his flaws: that he tends to space out (as a result of his ADHD), and that he tends to have problems reading (as a result of his dyslexia). He mentions that he's a half-blood.
Grover Underwood: Percy's best friend: a boy that tries to avoid problems and that cries when he gets frustrated, and whose mission looks like it is to protect Percy. In addition, he is crippled, so it is difficult for him to move quickly.

Why have I chosen this book?
Ever since I watched the films I have wanted to read the actual book, and this is because I have never seen a story whose plot revolves around Greek mythology, so it is really fascinating to me. Apart from that, I have just recently started wanting to learn about said topic, and since people say that reading this book is a fun and practical way of doing so I am excited to try it.

Summary from Chapters 1 to 4
In the beginning, Percy described how he was doing at school, mentioning that he was a troubled kid. He narrated one of the weirdest things that had happened to him: while on a school trip, one of his teachers, Mrs. Dodds, turned out to be a monster, but he managed to kill her with the help of Mr. Brunner, another teacher. Later, when he asked Grover and Mr. Brunner himself where was her, they just told him that there had never been a Mrs. Dodds at their school. He was left confused.
There was a new teacher taking Mrs. Dodds place: Mrs. Kerr. Everyone acted as if Mrs. Dodds had never existed. Everyone except Grover, who would hesitate before claiming she didn't really exist.
Time later he explained how his school performance started deteriorating and how he wasn't going to be able to continue on studying there. Yet, he mentioned that he was going to put effort into studying Latin since, at some point, Mr. Brunner told him he was going to need it later in his life.
After that, he briefly described his family setting: his loving mom (whom he later introduced as Sally Jackson) and his obnoxious stepfather (whom he later introduced too as Gabe Ugliano).
He discovered Grover talking about him to Mr. Brunner behind his back, stating that he was in some kind of danger.
Sometime later, summer break started and he was travelling with Grover, but since his friend started saying confusing things, Percy left him and decided to go home by himself. When he arrived home, his mother proposed him to visit the beach as they used to do before.
